Appointment of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), a Sarawak-owned utility company as the global patron of the World Energy Council (WEC) world evidence now recognizes the way the state government manages renewable energy sources efficiently.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said, besides having access to renewable energy sources, good governance and in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) gives confidence to the world to recognize Sarawak’s efforts.
“We are very fortunate that they have confidence in us by appointing SEB as the patron of the World Energy Council (WEC).
“This is very important. Meaning, the world recognizes the way Sarawak manages energy, the way we produce energy, and for the long term interest of Sarawak and Malaysia in general, to play a role in the new energy transition. ”
He said this in a special interview with UKAS and TVS after being a guest panel in a focus discussion at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) 2024 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) here on Wednesday.
Also accompanying the Premier of Sarawak are the Deputy Premier of Sarwak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Secretary of the Government of Sarawak Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment of Datuk Len Talif Salleh, SEB Chairman Datuk Ibrahim Baki and top officials of the Sarawak Government.
For the record, SEB was officially appointed as the patron of WEC last March 29, 2024 making it the first from the Southeast Asian region to join clusters across America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Through the agreement, SEB as one of the major hydropower developers in Southeast Asia, will support WEC in efforts to accelerate energy transition worldwide.
Meanwhile, the Premier of Sarawak said Sarawak’s involvement in the aggressive renewable energy industry will further expand the state’s economic resources.
Clearly, it will attract investors to come to Sarawak, because they are confident in the source of energy supply that the state owns.
“When this happens, it will be a prerequisite for investors to come to Sarawak and operate here.
“This will create new job and income opportunities,” he said.
