Celebrate Gawai Betong: A Festival of Tradition and Gratitude

Every year, the Iban community in Betong, Sarawak, comes together for Gawai Betong, a festival that marks the end of the harvest season. It’s a time to give thanks for a bountiful year, reconnect with family and friends, and welcome prosperity for the year ahead.

The festival is a feast for the senses – colourful traditional attire, the rhythmic beat of the gendang (drum), and the lively energy of ngajat (Iban dance) fill the air. One of the most important rituals is Ngiling Tikai, where people dance and chant to drive away bad luck and invite good fortune. Guests can indulge in delicious Iban delicacies like nasi manok (chicken rice) and pansuh (meat cooked in bamboo), while cultural performances offer a glimpse into the rich heritage of the Iban people.

More importantly, Gawai Betong is about togetherness. It’s a time for strengthening bonds, passing down traditions, and sharing the spirit of gratitude. For both locals and visitors alike, experiencing this festival is a truly unforgettable way to connect with the heart and soul of Iban culture.
