KUCHING (Aug 10): The upcoming Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching is a step towards realising Sarawak’s aspiration of becoming a regional centre for advanced healthcare, medical education, biomedical research and digital health innovation.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed that the development of the hospital sends a powerful message that Sarawak is no longer viewed merely as an emerging market, but as a strategic destination where world-class healthcare services, international investment and local talent can flourish together.
“It is indeed a great pleasure to join all of you this morning as we celebrate an important milestone, not only for HMI Medical, but also for Sarawak’s continuing journey towards becoming one of Southeast Asia’s leading destinations for quality care, innovation and human capital development,” he said in his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching at NorthBank here today.
The ceremony also marked the launch of the HMI Malaysia Skills and Workforce Development Budget 2030.
Abang Johari said achieving the ambition would require strong partnerships between the government, industry, universities, research institutions and technology providers.
He said HMI Medical’s investment in the new hospital was significant as it demonstrated growing confidence in Sarawak as a destination for long-term investment in quality healthcare and human capital development.
“This is not merely about constructing another hospital; it is about building confidence that Sarawak has the economic fundamentals to support world-class healthcare,” he said.
Under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, Abang Johari said healthcare has been identified as a sector with strong potential to generate high-income employment, attract investment and strengthen Sarawak’s economic competitiveness.
He added that the convergence of healthcare with renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, digital technology and artificial intelligence would further strengthen the sector’s potential.
Speaking at a press conference after the ceremony, Abang Johari said the Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching, targeted for launch in 2029, will be equipped with 300 beds and offer a range of medical services, including cancer treatment.
He also highlighted HMI Medical’s investment in human capital through collaborations with universities, including SEGi University, to develop well-trained healthcare professionals.
“This is again part of our human capital development. With the synergy by HMI Medical, we will improve the standard of healthcare in Sarawak,” he said.
He added that the Sarawak government will continue investing in infrastructure and connectivity to support the growth of the healthcare sector, including air connectivity and domestic transport links.
